ANDERSON Richard "Dick"

Although Dick first came to the district when Needilup was being cleared he would not be remembered by most of us until he returned to take over the Gnowangerup Newsagency during the war years.
Born in India, Dick came to Australia as a boy and made his living at several different callings, ranging from clearing contracting, a mail run with horses and coach in the north-west, a garage at Trayning and later newsagencies at Gnowangerup, Kojonup and Nornalup.
Essentially a man of out-of-doors, Dick was at his best when hunting and fishing. His gruff exterior, many found hid a heart of gold.
When the tobacco rationing was at its peak during the war the soldier on leave always found Dick an easy touch for a "bit of weed" from under the counter.
Many the child, now grown up with children of his own, that can recall unexpected kindnesses from Dick Anderson.
While he was in the local newsagency, Dick was the late Jim Grocock's off-sider at night stunts when the V.D.C. boys used to play soldiers. Dick and Jim were chief cooks.

How we recall with pleasure the sight of the two (we called them "old timers") standing over a gigantic copper of steaming stew on a frosty morning out in the scrub.
Once they forgot to bring something to stir the M and V and Dick cut a length of green jam stick and did the job.
Gee, that stew was good!
Sadly Dick suffered a stroke in Septemer 1953, and was bedridden until his death shortly later.

The late Mr. Anderson left a widow, three step-sons and a step-daughter to mourn his passing.
